(Aug.
20, 2008) -- It wouldn’t be fair to call R.E. Smith a rookie Pro Mod
racer…better to say “he’s back!” After sitting out several years, Smith is
making a name for himself in the Southern Outlaws tour, winning the Pro
Extreme title Sunday at Montgomery Motorsports Park. Now armed with a top
of the line Supercharged ride, Smith was the model of consistency, turning
in what he needed to win each round. In the finals, he lined up against low
qualifier Joe Baker but coasted to a win with a 4.068 at 183.34 miles per
hour as Baker had traction issues. Tim Tindle and Ron Stokes were the
semi-finalists.
In
the Pro Nitrous wars, legendary racer Edmund “Mr. Five Speed” Hall of
Montgomery fell one round short of a win Sunday. Keith Baker ended up on top
in the finals, running a 4.128 at 179.67 to Hall’s 4.160 at 173.74. Ronnie
“Boo” Baxley and defending ADRL Pro Nitrous champ Jamie Hancock of Opelika
were the semi-finalists.
Lester Pitts, a River Region resident, took the 4.70 title. In a battle
of Corvettes in the final round, Pitts ran a 4.747 at 139.51 to edge
Bessemer, AL racer Danny Magee, who ran a 4.772 at 143.51. Mark Johnson was
the lone semi-finalist.
Two
hometown heroes went at it in the 5.30 index finals with Paige Owens of
Luverne outracing Montgomery’s Jonathan Dixon to the stripe, thanks to a
stellar .005 light. Owens ran a 5.324 at 126.05 to Dixon’s quicker but
losing 5.309 at 131.32. Bobby Brooks of Montgomery and Mike Fisher were the
semi-finalists.
Another local racer, Bill Cowles of Ramer, took the 6.0 contest in a
final with Prattville racer and low qualifier Will Findley. Cowles ran a
perfect. 6.000 at 114.38 mph to best Findley’s 6.012 at 113.07. Buddy
Baggett was the lone semi-finalist.
Upcoming events at Montgomery Motorsports Park include the season finale
of the Super 7 series as hundreds of the top racers in the country compete
for the four $10,000 daily prizes beginning August 29 and going through
Labor Day.
MMP Promoter Jim Howard has also announced that the smash hit TV show
“Pinks Allout” will be shooting at MMP November 14-15.
